England does luxury hotels in several very different ways.
In London, it may involve a doorman who remembers a guest from five years ago, afternoon tea served with perfect ceremony and a suite overlooking Mayfair.
In the countryside, it could mean muddy boots beside the door, vegetables from the estate garden and a spa hidden behind an old walled garden.
Both can be luxurious. Neither suits everyone.
The Tiernan Travel team has inspected London suites, tested countryside spas, examined interconnecting bedrooms and eaten enough hotel breakfasts to hold very firm opinions about scrambled eggs.
We have also tasted the wine.
Again, this is called professional diligence.
Here are some of the luxury hotels in England we book and recommend most frequently, from celebrated London institutions to country retreats that still feel like discoveries.
Claridge’s, London
Claridge’s is one of those rare hotels that remains famous without becoming impersonal.
Located in Mayfair, it brings together Victorian, Art Deco and contemporary design, with rooms and suites that vary significantly in character. (Claridge’s)
For some clients, staying at Claridge’s is part of the reason they are travelling to London. They want the arrival, the lobby, the service and the feeling of being inside one of the city’s great institutions.
During an inspection, we do not simply admire the grandest suite. We look at the entry-level categories too, because those are often what determines whether the hotel represents genuine value for a particular journey.
Our honest advice: clarify which version of Claridge’s the client expects.
Some rooms lean into Art Deco glamour, while others feel more contemporary or traditionally English. Room selection matters.
Best for: milestone celebrations, first-time luxury visitors, fashion and art itineraries and clients who want the hotel to be part of their London experience.

The Goring, London
The Goring feels distinctly English and wonderfully personal.
It has been run by the same family since 1910 and sits in Belgravia, close to Buckingham Palace. (The Goring)
The hotel offers traditional service without feeling cold. There is humour, warmth and a sense that the property has a personality rather than a corporate manual.
We particularly like it for repeat visitors and families. Interconnecting rooms and family accommodation are available, but the hotel never turns into a conventional family resort. (The Goring)
Our honest advice: recommend it to clients who value character over spectacle.
The Goring is not trying to be the newest or largest hotel in London. Its strength is consistency, family ownership and an unmistakable sense of place.
Best for: royal London itineraries, families, couples and clients seeking traditional English hospitality.

Heckfield Place, Hampshire
Heckfield Place is one of our favourite ways to move a client from London into the English countryside.
The restored Georgian house sits at the centre of a working estate around an hour from London. Its food and broader philosophy are closely connected to the estate’s farm, gardens and seasonal produce. (heckfieldplace.com)
The interiors are calm rather than showy. The atmosphere encourages guests to slow down, walk, eat and reconnect with a quieter rhythm.
Members of our team have inspected the rooms and explored the estate. We also paid close attention to the dining, because it would be irresponsible to recommend farm-led hospitality without checking how the farm reaches the plate.
Our honest advice: place it after London, not in the middle of a frantic touring programme.
Heckfield works beautifully as a decompression stay following several busy city days.
Best for: couples, wellness travellers, food lovers and clients wanting countryside within easy reach of London.

The Newt in Somerset
The Newt is more than a luxury hotel.
It is an entire estate experience built around gardens, orchards, food, design, history and Somerset produce.
Hotel accommodation is divided between Hadspen House and the Farmyard, surrounded by orchards, woodland, lakes and gardens. (The Newt in Somerset)
What makes the Newt special is that guests are encouraged to explore.
The gardens are not decoration around the hotel. They are one of the central reasons to stay, with a long horticultural history and a contemporary vision shaped around beauty and usefulness. (The Newt in Somerset)
We have inspected the accommodation, explored the estate and tested the cider. More than one variety may have been involved.
Our honest advice: never use the Newt as a one-night bed between destinations.
Clients need time to walk, eat, visit the gardens and understand the estate.
Best for: garden lovers, food-focused travellers, couples and clients exploring Somerset, Bath and the West Country.
Estelle Manor, Oxfordshire
Estelle Manor represents a newer, more socially energetic version of the English country-house hotel.
The atmosphere is fashionable, contemporary and considerably livelier than that of a traditional manor house. It appeals to clients who enjoy beautiful interiors, wellness and excellent dining but do not want hushed corridors and excessive formality.
The accommodation options also make it useful for families and groups who may prefer houses or larger spaces rather than a row of individual hotel rooms.
Our team has visited, inspected and naturally investigated where one might sit with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
There are several answers.
Our honest advice: understand the atmosphere.
Estelle Manor is not the quietest country retreat. That is exactly why some clients love it.
Best for: younger luxury travellers, groups of friends, families and design-conscious couples.

The Pig Hotels
The Pig hotels are proof that luxury is not defined by gold taps or formal service.
The collection focuses on relaxed country-house hospitality, local produce, kitchen gardens and properties with strong individual identities.
We use them for clients who care about food and atmosphere but do not want to dress for dinner or feel watched every time they walk through reception.
Each Pig is different, so we do not treat them as interchangeable. Location and routing still matter.
Our honest advice: explain the style clearly.
These are not conventional grand five-star hotels. For many travellers, that is their greatest strength.
Best for: food lovers, couples, younger luxury clients and relaxed self-drive journeys.
England Has More Than One Definition of Luxury
The best luxury hotel in England may be a London icon where every detail is managed with ceremony.
It may also be a country house where the vegetables were picked that morning and the greatest decision of the day is whether to visit the spa before or after lunch.
Our role at Tiernan Travel is to understand which version the client wants.
We inspect rooms because photographs do not show everything. We examine hotel locations because a beautiful property in the wrong place can damage an itinerary. We taste the food because dining often shapes the entire stay.
And we sample the wine because no one should make recommendations based on theory alone.
