England DMC for Travel Advisors | Luxury England Itineraries Beyond London

So, your clients want to visit England.

Wonderful. 🇬🇧

They’ve got:

London.

Buckingham Palace.

Tower of London.

Westminster Abbey.

Afternoon tea.

Maybe Windsor.

And then…

they’re flying home.

Wait.

What?

😂

At Tiernan Travel, we’re an England DMC working exclusively with travel advisors, designing bespoke luxury itineraries throughout England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

And while we LOVE London…

London is not England.

In fact, some of our favourite parts of England begin when you leave it.

First things first: London absolutely deserves its place.

We’re not suggesting your first-time clients skip London.

Quite the opposite.

London is one of the greatest cities in the world.

History.

Royalty.

Incredible museums.

West End theatre.

Fantastic restaurants.

Beautiful hotels.

Private guides.

Markets.

Neighbourhoods.

Pubs.

And approximately 47 things your clients will suddenly decide they must see after you’ve already finished their itinerary.

😂

For first-time visitors, we generally want enough time to actually experience London rather than simply photograph it.

But then?

Get out of London.

Because England changes very quickly once you do.

The Cotswolds are not a day trip checkbox.

Ahhh, the Cotswolds.

Everyone wants them.

Honey-coloured cottages.

Beautiful villages.

Country pubs.

Rolling countryside.

Gardens.

Manor houses.

Sheep.

Very photogenic doors.

More sheep.

🐑

And yes, you can visit the Cotswolds from London for the day.

But if your clients are looking for a luxury England itinerary, we’d often rather they stayed.

Because the Cotswolds feel completely different when the day-trippers leave.

Stay in a beautiful country-house hotel.

Have a long dinner.

Visit villages without racing between them.

Go walking.

Visit a garden.

Have lunch in a pub.

Perhaps…

don’t do anything for an afternoon.

Wild concept, we know.

😂

Oxford is more than a photo stop.

Oxford is often treated like this:

Arrive.

University.

Photo.

Lunch.

Leave.

Done.

But with the right private guide, Oxford becomes fascinating.

The colleges.

The architecture.

The characters.

The traditions.

The strange little details you would walk straight past without knowing what they meant.

And depending on your clients’ interests, Oxford can also work beautifully alongside the Cotswolds.

This is what good itinerary design should do.

Places should connect naturally.

Not simply exist as pins on a map.

Then there’s Bath.

Another city we think deserves more than:

“We’ll stop there for two hours on the way somewhere else.”

Bath is beautiful.

Roman history.

Georgian architecture.

Independent shops.

Wonderful restaurants.

Elegant hotels.

And one of those places where simply walking around is part of the experience.

For the right clients, Bath combined with the Cotswolds can create a gorgeous few days outside London.

Particularly for travellers interested in:

History.

Architecture.

Gardens.

Food.

Literature.

And, of course…

Jane Austen.

Your clients have already done London?

Even better.

This is where England becomes really interesting.

A second or third visit doesn’t need to be:

London again + somewhere different for one night.

We can start exploring.

York.

The Yorkshire Dales.

The Lake District.

Cornwall.

Devon.

Northumberland.

The Peak District.

Norfolk.

Kent.

The South Downs.

The English countryside is incredibly varied.

And many North American travellers simply don’t realise how much there is beyond the classic London – Stonehenge – Bath combination.

Let’s talk about the Lake District.

Beautiful?

Absolutely.

Worth visiting?

Definitely.

Conveniently located beside London?

Absolutely not.

😂

This is where geography starts getting involved.

We occasionally receive itineraries that look something like:

London → Cotswolds → Lake District → Edinburgh → Isle of Skye.

In approximately six days.

🚩🚩🚩

Google Maps has a lot to answer for.

The Lake District deserves time.

It works beautifully as part of a journey north towards Scotland.

It does not work beautifully when it has been squeezed into an itinerary because somebody saw a lovely photograph of a lake.

A good England DMC should know the difference between something being technically possible and actually enjoyable.

York deserves much more attention.

If your clients are travelling between London and Scotland, York can be brilliant.

History everywhere.

Medieval streets.

York Minster.

City walls.

Fantastic stories.

Great food.

And it connects naturally with northern England.

This is the sort of place we love including because it can make the journey itself part of the trip.

Rather than:

London.

Train.

Edinburgh.

Done.

Suddenly, your client starts understanding that England isn’t just the bit surrounding London.

And then there’s the English countryside.

This is where we think luxury becomes much more interesting.

Because luxury in England isn’t necessarily another five-star city hotel.

Sometimes it’s:

A beautiful country estate.

A private garden visit.

A brilliant local guide.

A tiny village.

A historic house.

A pub lunch beside a fire.

A walk through the countryside.

A chef who knows every producer within 20 miles.

Or waking up somewhere so peaceful your clients genuinely have no idea what day it is.

That can be luxury too.

Please don’t make every day a sightseeing day.

This is one of our recurring themes.

Because we mean it.

😂

Your clients do not need:

9:00am castle.

10:30am garden.

12:00pm village.

1:00pm lunch.

2:00pm stately home.

4:00pm another village.

5:30pm scenic viewpoint.

6:00pm collapse.

If you’ve booked them into an incredible English country-house hotel…

LET THEM ENJOY THE HOTEL.

Have lunch.

Use the spa.

Walk around the grounds.

Sit beside the fire.

Order a drink.

Have absolutely nowhere they need to be until dinner.

A £700-a-night hotel is considerably less luxurious when your clients only see the bedroom while unconscious.

England is fantastic for gardens.

And we don’t mean:

“My clients really love gardening, so perhaps we should visit one garden.”

We can build an entire journey around them.

England has extraordinary gardens, estates and private properties.

For clients who genuinely love horticulture, this can become one of the main themes of their trip rather than an activity squeezed between two castles.

And this is where knowing your clients matters.

Because the couple who have spent 30 years creating their own garden at home probably don’t want the same England itinerary as the family travelling with two teenagers.

Bespoke should actually mean bespoke.

Food matters too.

There is still a slightly outdated idea in some parts of the world that people don’t travel to England for food.

We would like a word.

😂

London alone could occupy a client for weeks.

But outside London?

Country pubs.

Farm shops.

Local producers.

Seafood.

Michelin-starred restaurants.

Afternoon tea.

Markets.

Regional specialities.

And some genuinely fantastic destination hotels built around food.

For food-focused travellers, England can be wonderful.

And no…

they do not have to eat fish and chips every day.

Although they should probably do it once.

What about castles and stately homes?

We have quite a few.

😂

But again, we don’t believe in adding them simply because they’re there.

Castle.

Castle.

Stately home.

Castle.

Abbey.

Castle.

By day four, even the most enthusiastic history lover is struggling to remember which Henry lived where.

We’d rather understand what your clients actually find interesting.

Royal history?

Architecture?

World War II?

Literature?

Gardens?

Art?

Aristocratic families?

Film locations?

Then we can build experiences around those interests.

England works beautifully with Scotland.

This is one of our favourite combinations.

London.

Perhaps the Cotswolds.

Then north.

York.

Maybe the Lake District.

Then into Scotland.

Suddenly the journey has a story.

The landscape changes.

The architecture changes.

The accents definitely change.

😂

And because Tiernan Travel operates throughout England and Scotland, the itinerary doesn’t need to feel like two completely separate trips stitched together.

We can look at the entire journey.

And please don’t forget Wales.

We know.

This article is about England.

But we’re going to sneak Wales in anyway.

😂

If your clients are travelling through western England, Wales can sometimes be a fantastic addition.

Castles.

Mountains.

Coastline.

Beautiful hotels.

Small towns.

And considerably fewer Americans saying:

“Oh yes, everyone we know went there last year.”

For well-travelled clients looking for something a little different, that’s not a bad thing.

How long do your clients need in England?

How long is a piece of string?

If they’re first-time visitors and London is the priority, perhaps:

London – 4 or 5 nights

Then add:

Cotswolds – 2 or 3 nights

And suddenly you have a lovely first introduction to England.

Have more time?

Add Bath.

Oxford.

York.

The Lake District.

Or build the journey around a particular interest.

For clients wanting to explore both southern and northern England, we would much rather have around two weeks than attempt to race through the country in seven days.

Again:

Fewer places. Better trip.

Private driver-guide or self-drive?

Both can work beautifully in England.

For London?

Your clients absolutely do not need a car.

Please don’t give them one.

😂

Once they’re outside London, it depends on the traveller.

A private driver-guide creates an incredibly easy experience and adds local knowledge throughout the journey.

Self-drive gives confident travellers freedom and can allow more of the budget to go towards hotels and experiences.

Train travel can also work brilliantly between certain cities.

Sometimes the best England itinerary uses all three.

Train where trains make sense.

Private driver where a driver makes sense.

And perhaps self-drive through the countryside.

It doesn’t have to be one solution for the entire trip.

So what does a luxury England itinerary actually look like?

It doesn’t have to mean:

Five-star London ✔️
Rolls-Royce transfer ✔️
Afternoon tea ✔️
Castle ✔️
Champagne ✔️

Those things can certainly be lovely.

But for us, luxury is also:

Time.

Space.

Access.

The right people.

The right hotel.

Not packing a suitcase every morning.

And having somebody who understands the geography well enough to say:

“No. You really don’t want to do that.”

😂

Why work with an England DMC?

Because Google can tell you how far London is from the Cotswolds.

It can’t tell you whether the Cotswolds are actually right for your client.

A booking engine can show you hundreds of hotels.

It can’t necessarily tell you which one works best for the itinerary you’re trying to create.

And ChatGPT can certainly suggest 27 things to do in England.

👀

But somebody still needs to turn all of that information into one trip that actually works.

That’s where we come in.

At Tiernan Travel, we work exclusively with travel advisors to create bespoke travel throughout:

🇬🇧 England
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales
🇬🇧 Northern Ireland
🇮🇪 Republic of Ireland

You tell us about the travellers.

Their dates.

Their budget.

Their interests.

Their hotel preferences.

Their pace.

And the things they absolutely MUST see because somebody on Instagram told them they have to.

We’ll work out the rest.

And if they’ve requested:

London + Cotswolds + Lake District + Edinburgh + Skye in seven nights…

Send it over.

We’ll have a chat. 😂
